What Happens When Colleagues Laugh Together?

My Experience with Laughter Yoga and Team Building
Over the last many years , I’ve had the chance to run Laughter Yoga sessions for thousands of employees across a lot of different organisations.
From big conferences and sales meetings to leadership retreats, employee wellness programs and team offsites, I keep noticing this same pattern again and again :
People might work together every day, but they don’t always connect in a real way. Like not even that “visible” way.
In many workplaces, employees sit close, attend meetings together, and trade emails all day. Still, somehow there are invisible barriers between people.
Different departments. Different designations. Different vibes. And sometimes, just… very little actual closeness.
That is where I’ve seen something kind of beautiful happen through Laughter Yoga, it’s almost like the room gets re-tuned.
The First few minutes
When I start a Laughter Yoga session, I can feel the room looking at me with curiosity. Sometimes with a little confusion.
Some people ask quietly,
“How can we laugh without jokes ?”
Others look shy , or keep their arms crossed, or just stand there like they’re waiting for instructions.
And a few just observe, silent mode.
Honestly, it’s totally normal. Most adults are not used to laughing out loud with coworkers they see daily.
But then slowly, it changes.
We begin with simple laughter routines, clapping, breathing , and playful movement. Colleagues start making eye contact, people smile more, then one person laughs genuinely, and suddenly the energy flips.
Not in a loud dramatic way, but in a “oh wow, this feels lighter” way. Within minutes the whole atmosphere seems different.
When designations disappear
One of my favourite parts of corporate Laughter Yoga is watching the formal barriers vanish.
For a few moments , the CEO, manager, team leader and employee are all doing the same thing:
laughing together.
I’ve often watched people from different departments, who may never have spoken before, connect through a simple Laughter Yoga activity. After that, they seem a bit more at ease. Conversations feel less forced, and the air feels calmer and lighter.
And then something important begins to grow, like trust.
Why laughter helps teams
Team building is not only about activities, games, or fixing problems together.
It’s also about creating positive shared moments, like little emotional wins.
When people laugh together, they feel more connected. They communicate more smoothly. They start opening up—without trying too hard.
And when people feel connected, teamwork becomes easier to build, piece by piece.
I’ve seen this across industries, in different types of organisations and team cultures.
Sometimes a few minutes of shared laughter yoga creates a sense of belonging that long meetings can’t always manage.
More than just laughter
A lot of people think Laughter Yoga is only about laughing.
It isn’t.
Laughter Yoga blends intentional Laughter Yoga exercises with deep breathing, movement, playfulness, and relaxation.
- You don’t need jokes.
- You don’t need comedy.
- You don’t need a reason that “makes sense” for laughter.
The idea is straightforward, kind of like this:
When people participate together, they create a shared experience.
And shared experiences build stronger teams, not just on paper, but in feeling.
A small activity with a big impact
You can include Laughter Yoga in team-building programs, employee wellness initiatives, leadership offsites, conferences, annual meetings, and corporate events.
Yes , the session can be short.
But the feeling of connection usually stays around longer than the calendar wants it to.
Over the years, I realised something important:
People don’t remember every presentation they attend.
They might not remember every meeting.
But they do remember how they felt.
And when people laugh together, connect, and experience joy as a team, those moments tend to stick.
The final thought
In today’s busy workplaces, teams don’t only need targets, strategies and deadlines.
They also need connection.
They need trust.
They need reminders that behind every designation is a human being.
Maybe that’s why Laughter Yoga works so well as a team-building activity. Because sometimes, a few minutes of laughter yoga can do something simple, yet really powerful.
It helps people feel like a team again.
